New Patients: What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit starts with a conversation, not a drill.

We take time to understand your concerns and what you want for your teeth, then examine your whole mouth properly, using digital scans where they help. You leave with a clear picture of where you stand, your options explained in plain English, and no pressure to decide anything on the day.

New Patient Comprehensive Examination: £119. Children £79. Small X-rays £18 each, only where needed.

What to expect during your first visit to Integrated Dentalcare.

Who it’s for

  • You’re new to Edinburgh, or new to private dentistry, and want a practice you can stay with
  • You haven’t seen a dentist for a while and would rather be told where you stand than judged
  • You’ve had a lot of dentistry over the years and want someone to look at the whole picture, not one tooth at a time
  • You’re nervous, and the idea of a conversation before anyone picks up an instrument appeals
  • You want long-lasting, preventive care rather than a quick fix

What happens at your first visit

Nuno welcoming a visitor at reception and handing over an information leaflet, Integrated Dentalcare, Edinburgh
  1. Before you arrive. We’ll send a short medical and dental history form so your appointment time is spent on you, not paperwork.
  2. We listen before we look. Your dentist asks what’s brought you in, what’s bothered you about dentistry in the past, and what you’d like for your teeth long term.
  3. A thorough examination. Teeth, gums, jaw joints, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth, including a mouth cancer screen. We check how your teeth work together, not just whether there are holes.
  4. Digital photographs and X-rays, where needed. Clinical photographs let you see what we see on a large screen. X-rays are taken only when they add something.
  5. A digital scan, where it helps. An intraoral scanner builds a 3D model of your teeth in a few minutes, with no impression material. It’s useful for monitoring wear and for planning any restorative, aligner or implant treatment.
  6. Your care, explained. We go through what we’ve found, what’s urgent, what can wait and what your options are, with costs. You can ask for a written summary afterwards. There’s no pressure to decide on the day.

Allow about an hour. If something is causing you pain, tell reception when you book. At your first visit we will aim to diagnose it, discuss your options and then plan a follow-up procedure visit to resolve the situation.

What you’ll be left with

You’ll leave your first visit knowing exactly where your mouth stands, what matters and what doesn’t, and what your choices are, with costs. Whatever you need next, you’ll be looked after by a dentist who is experienced across general dentistry and has a niche they do most of, which means a better experience and more predictable outcomes for you. Practice makes perfect.

  • Teeth that last longer. Our experienced general dentists focus on restorative dentistry and take a proactive, minimally invasive approach, so your own teeth keep as much of their life expectancy as possible instead of being patched each time something breaks.
  • You see what we see. Intraoral scanning, digital X-rays and in-house CT scanning put your mouth on a screen in front of you, so decisions are made with you, not for you, and you make fewer repeat visits.
  • No referrals elsewhere if you ever lose a tooth. Dr Neeraj Puri has placed dental implants for over 20 years, including metal-free ceramic implants since 2010, with 3D planning and X-Guide navigated surgery. The dentist who knows your mouth stays involved from start to finish.
  • Mercury-free, metal-free where you want it. Tooth-coloured composite and ceramic as standard, and safe amalgam removal if you’d like your old metal fillings replaced.
  • Time to ask everything. Appointments are long enough that you never leave with a question you didn’t get to ask.

Your questions

I haven’t been to a dentist for years. Will I be judged?

No. We see this often. Our job is to tell you where you stand and what your choices are, not to comment on how you got here.

Will I have treatment at the first visit?

Usually not. The first visit is about examination and planning. If you’re in pain, tell us when you book: we will aim to diagnose the cause, talk through your options and book a follow-up procedure visit to resolve it.

Do I need a scan or X-rays?

Only where they help. Your dentist will explain what each one shows and why it’s being suggested before it’s taken.

I’m nervous about the dentist. Can you help?

Yes. Tell us when you book. The first visit is designed to be unhurried, and for treatment we offer sedation where appropriate.

Do you see children?

Yes. A child’s new patient examination is £79, and children under 5 of Manor Maintenance Plan members are seen free of charge.

I just want my smile to look a bit better, not different. Can we talk about that?

Yes, and it’s a common reason for a first visit. Tell your dentist what you notice in photographs, whether that’s discolouration, uneven edges or a small chip. We’ll show you what’s possible with whitening, composite bonding or clear aligners, and we’ll tell you honestly when less is more. The aim is a smile that looks healthy and like you, not one that looks done.

I only want an implant consultation. Is this the right page?

If you have a specific missing or failing tooth and want to talk about implants, book an implant consultation instead. If you’d like a full check of everything, start here.
