In Pain? Let’s Save Your Tooth Quickly and Gently.
Root Canal Treatment in Edinburgh
A severe toothache doesn’t just interrupt your day—it can take over your life.
If your tooth is infected or decayed, root canal treatment can stop the pain, save your natural tooth, and prevent the need for extraction.
At Integrated Dentalcare, we use the latest techniques and technologies to make the process fast, precise, and surprisingly comfortable.
Beyond Just Your Toothache
A neglected infection won’t heal on its own. Left untreated, it can spread, destroy the surrounding bone, and lead to emergency extraction or worse.
But here’s the good news: You might be able to save your tooth.
Root canal therapy removes the infection at its source, relieves the pain, and gives you a better chance to keep your tooth in place.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal treatment involves:
- Removing the infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth
- Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals
- Filling and sealing the space to prevent reinfection
- Restoring the tooth with a natural-looking crown or filling
The goal? Keep your real tooth, stop the pain, and avoid more invasive procedures like extraction and implants.
Who It’s For
You might need a root canal if:
- You’re experiencing sharp, throbbing, or lingering tooth pain
- Hot/cold makes your tooth flare up
- Your tooth is darkened, swollen, or sensitive to pressure
- Your dentist has told you there’s deep decay or an abscess
If any of that sounds familiar, don’t delay. Acting quickly increases your chance of saving the tooth.

The Integrated Dentalcare Root Canal Process
We understand most people feel anxious about this treatment—that’s why we’ve refined the process to feel calm, clear, and controlled:

Step 1: Diagnosis and Scan
We use digital X-rays to assess the tooth’s condition and confirm whether a root canal is needed.

Step 2: Comfort-First Anaesthesia
We numb the area completely. Most patients say it feels like getting a regular filling.

Step 3: Cleaning and Disinfection
Infection is removed from the canal using specialist tools. The area is disinfected thoroughly.

Step 4: Filling and Sealing
We seal the tooth with a biocompatible material to stop the infection from returning.

Step 5: Restoration
Most often, we place a custom crown to protect and strengthen your tooth in the long term.

Real Patient Experiences
My issue was with an old root canal, done at an NHS Hospital several years ago, that was now beginning to cause some discomfort. I mentioned this to Neeraj Puri during a routine check-up, and he explained that the tooth did indeed have an issue that required attention. He then presented me with three options: further root canal treatment, extraction of the tooth, or extraction of the tooth with a dental implant taking its place. I decided the best long-term option was the dental implant. From start to finish of the process, I have to say that Integrated Dentalcare were first class. Everything about the process was explained clearly, and I always felt in control of my treatment. Neeraj is very personable and has a calm manner which puts you at ease – it’s also evident that he’s a skilled dentist. The dental assistants, too, were excellent. With regards to my implant, I am delighted with the outcome. It looks exactly like a real tooth, and I can now eat (and speak!) normally again. I can’t recommend Integrated Dental highly enough for doing such a brilliant job. Thank you!

I couldn’t be happier with my experience at this dental practice! When I first came in 2022, I had several cavities, bite issues (deep bite), and needed a root canal re-treatment and a crown. Dr. Allan Matthews and his team created a comprehensive treatment plan, including the necessary restoration work and teeth movement using clear aligners. Their attention to detail is remarkable, and they are true experts in their field. The results have been amazing! All the restoration work and teeth movement are now complete, and I realize I was in constant discomfort before due to my unhealthy bite. Now, my bite is much healthier and more functional, and the cosmetic improvement is fantastic. It’s life-changing to be pain-free and proud of my smile. Their hygiene care is excellent, using the latest methods to keep my teeth in great condition. The care and professionalism shown by Dr. Matthews and his team have been exceptional, and I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for expert dental care!

When I started my journey with Integrated Dentalcare my confidence with my teeth was at an all time low. I’d had several failed treatments in the past and had a number of recurring problems – some of which were very painful. I hated the shape, colour and condition of my teeth. I chose Integrated Dentalcare based on family recommendations – and I am so so glad I did. All the staff are extremely competent, knowledgable and friendly. The receptionists, dentists and hygienists alike. I had all of my fillings replaced with lovely new white ones. I had all of my root canal treatment repaired as poor dentistry in the past (at another practice) meant that I had recurring pain. I had orthodontic treatment and I had whitening treatment too. The most important things to me was the whitening treatment which worked better than anyone expected due to the amazing products they gave me. I also am so happy with the skill and care taken place with my bridge work – making the new teeth the correct shape for my mouth and unable to tell they aren’t my real teeth! I can now smile and feel totally not self conscious. It’s made a massive difference to my entire life. They have given me the skills to continue practicing good dental hygiene meaning that I won’t have as many problems in the future. Expertise is incomparable, staff are so accommodating and they will do their upmost to allow you to achieve your dental goals! After an initial consultation with Neeraj it was clear that my negligence combined with poor prior dentistry had led me to this point. Neeraj filled me with confidence after my first appointment and for the first time in years I felt as if someone understood my problems and could actually fix them. X rays showed that my root canals had been unsuccessful and some of my fillings too. I had a very out of place incisor crown that was not consistent with the rest of my teeth causing me to cover my mouth with my hand when talking to people and laughing. I felt as if my teeth were embarrassing and I never wanted anyone to see them. I met with Nikki for an educational appointment on brushing and flossing. Within a couple of weeks I noticed a difference in the shade of my teeth and family and friends had noticed too. I then met with Adrian for three very lengthy appointments where he fixed all of my root canals and fillings. Today, Adrian replaced the crown that looked so different to my other teeth with one that could be my own tooth. I felt very emotional when I looked in the mirror and saw my smile. I still have a brace and implants on the agenda for 2016. The team are so dedicated and genuinely passionate about dentistry.

FAQs – Let’s Put Your Mind at Ease
Is it going to hurt?
We use local anaesthetics to numb the area fully, and can offer sedation if needed. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is.
How long does it take?
Usually between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on complexity. Sometimes it’s split across two visits.
Will I need a crown?
In many cases, yes—especially for back teeth. A crown protects and strengthens the restored tooth long term.
Is it better than extraction?
Absolutely. Keeping your natural teeth helps maintain bite alignment, jaw health, and bone integrity. Extraction often requires future replacement with an implant or bridge.
