What Are Crowns, Inlays and Onlays?
These are three levels of indirect dental restoration, matched to the amount of damage your tooth has. All are crafted to match your natural teeth’s shape, shade, and translucency using strong porcelain or composite resin, fabricated in a dental lab.
Crowns
Full-cover “caps” that encase the entire visible tooth (above the gum level).
Best for: Severely damaged, cracked, or root canal-treated teeth that need full reinforcement.
Inlays
Custom-made restorations that fit within the grooves of the tooth.
Best for: Moderate decay or damage that doesn’t affect the outer edges (cusps).
Onlays
Larger than inlays—cover one or more cusps but not the full tooth.
Best for: Damage that’s too extensive for an inlay but still allows some natural tooth to be preserved.

What the Treatment Looks Like
Most fillings are completed in two appointments—one for the examination and another for the treatment.
Step 1: Assessment and Planning
We utilise digital scans and 3D imaging to assess the damage and recommend the most suitable type of restoration.
Step 2: Tooth Preparation
We remove any decayed or damaged areas. For crowns, more reshaping is required. For inlays and onlays, we preserve a healthier tooth.
Step 3: Digital Impressions and Custom Design
We take ultra-precise scans and send them to our partnered dental lab, where your restoration is crafted to fit and blend perfectly. You may wear a temporary restoration while you wait.
Step 4: Fitting and Bonding
We check the fit, colour match, and adjust the bite. Then it’s bonded securely in place and polished to feel like your natural tooth.

I underwent dental implant treatment at Integrated Dentalcare and found the treatment and care provided of an excellent standard. Everyone in the practice combines friendliness with professionalism, which helps put patients at ease. I had a complicated replacement of an original baby tooth which had finally “given up”. It involved removal of the original tooth, treatment of any infection, rebuilding of the bone, to enable it to be able to take the implant post, insertion of post, and finally fitting the made to measure crown. It was a painstaking series of procedures which took place over a year to give time for new bone to form. Throughout I was treated respectfully, and given good explanations of the procedures planned. All procedures were carried out using state of the art equipment, which together with the skill of the dentist gave me great reassurance. I would not hesitate to recommend Integrated Dentalcare.

I have recently completed an extensive programme of dental treatment lasting over two years, that has included a dental implant, several crowns, mercury amalgam replacements and ‘ordinary’ fillings. I couldn’t be happier with my experience at this dental practice! When I first came in 2022, I had several cavities, bite issues (deep bite), and needed a root canal re-treatment and a crown. Dr. Allan Matthews and his team created a comprehensive treatment plan, including the necessary restoration work and teeth movement using clear aligners. Their attention to detail is remarkable, and they are true experts in their field. The results have been amazing! All the restoration work and teeth movement are now complete, and I realize I was in constant discomfort before due to my unhealthy bite. Now, my bite is much healthier and more functional, and the cosmetic improvement is fantastic. It’s life-changing to be pain-free and proud of my smile. Their hygiene care is excellent, using the latest methods to keep my teeth in great condition. When I started my journey with Integrated Dentalcare my confidence with my teeth was at an all time low. I’d had several failed treatments in the past and had a number of recurring problems – some of which were very painful. I hated the shape, colour and condition of my teeth. I chose Integrated Dentalcare based on family recommendations – and I am so so glad I did. All the staff are extremely competent, knowledgable and friendly. The receptionists, dentists and hygienists alike. I had all of my fillings replaced with lovely new white ones. I had all of my root canal treatment repaired as poor dentistry in the past (at another practice) meant that I had recurring pain. I had orthodontic treatment and I had whitening treatment too. It depends on the damage. Crowns are used for complete coverage; inlays and onlays are more conservative options. We’ll recommend the best option after assessment.
Can I eat normally afterwards?
Yes. Once fitted and the anaesthetics wear off, you can return to your regular diet.
