Duty of Candour

Integrated Dentalcare is committed to delivering safe, high-quality care to all patients. Central to this commitment is our responsibility to act with honesty, integrity and transparency at all times.

The Duty of Candour is a statutory requirement for healthcare providers in Scotland. It ensures that when an unintended or unexpected incident occurs during the provision of care, and that incident results in harm, the patient (or their representative) is informed in a timely, open and supportive manner.

Maintaining the trust of our patients is of the utmost importance to us, and we recognise that openness is fundamental to that trust.

The Duty of Candour Procedure

Immediate Care and Notification

The patient’s safety and wellbeing remain our first priority. Any necessary clinical care will be provided without delay. The patient (or their representative) will be informed as soon as reasonably practicable that an incident has occurred.

Explanation and Apology

We will provide a clear and factual explanation of what is known at the time and offer a sincere and appropriate apology.

Review and Outcome

A thorough review will be undertaken in line with regulatory guidance. Following this review, we will communicate our findings and outline any actions identified to reduce the risk of recurrence. A written record will be maintained in accordance with legal and professional requirements.

Annual Duty of Candour Report

In accordance with statutory requirements, we prepare and publish an Annual Duty of Candour Report. This report provides a summary of any incidents to which the Duty of Candour applied during the reporting period, together with an outline of the actions taken in response and any improvements implemented as a result. The purpose of this report is to ensure transparency and to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to patient safety, learning and continuous improvement.
